The Public Health Agency of Canada finally made official what many knew. Atlantic Canada, specifically St. Francis Xavier University (Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s alma mater), will be the prime Canadian focus for the social determinants of health approach to health strategy.
Both recognition and funding for furthering this approach are certainly welcome. Annual contributions of $1.5 M for three years should be able to at a minimum develop the mandated development of ‘vision, priorities and structure’ for this new national collaborating centre.
We developed a community resources web application for Prevent Stroke Ontario that applies both physical and social determinants of health in combination with mapping. One of its more interesting social reporting features, available to administrators, is the ability to generate regional maps of resources addressing a specified risk factor.
