Social Hygiene Posters 1910-1970

Use of visual imagery for communication and design are taking on greater importance. Quite simply, if the message doesn’t successfully catch and keep the attention of the intended audience, it fails.

Getting the message through the din of the day is an ongoing challenge. Now millions are doing their own publishing. Corporations grab space, position, and every possible sensory access point. Sophisticated manipulation creates seemingly spontaneous, grassroots opinion through ‘buzz marketing’ ‘viral marketing’ and other germinations.

In the past, public posters in schools, workplaces, and other places were a key channel for getting the message out.  ‘Use your mind constructively…, Keeping fit…, Exercise upon arising…, The Spirited horse and the sex impulse…’ are only some of the health promotion posters in the Unversity of Minnesota Libraries online collection.
