We had to stop the truth to save it

Peter Arnett is keeping alive the flame of free speech and free thought. His words and analysis will now come from the country that lost a rebellion, a colony, and eventually an empire because it could not sustain its world view. What better berth to observe the growth of the New American Century than from the centre of one of the last great world powers?

Continuing a life time of watching, asking, noting and describing as accurately as any professional observer, Arnett is clearly a throwback to less manageable times. The lessons learned from Vietnam and subsequent conflicts appear to be: target the bombs as carefully as possible; fill each available channel with the scripted messages;  and reign in the reporters and commentators that might reach the people.

That voices such as Arnett’s continue to speak and media such as the Daily Mirror continue to provide them a channel sustains hope.
