Linc Durand, organizing to the end

A memorial Mass was said in St. Polycarp’s Church in Somerville on Jan. 23 for John Lincoln Durand, former founder and chairman of the Massachusetts Union of Public Housing Tenants.

Mr. Durand died of pneumonia Jan. 19 in Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 78 and lived in Somerville.

Mr. Durand was an advocate for public-housing tenants for many years until shortly before his death.

He organized public-housing tenants throughout the state. In 1970, he established the tenants union, which advises tenants with housing problems.

Mr. Durand also established the Mystic Housing Tenants Association in 1967 and in 1968 traveled with them to Washington.
